JNMC ICU: A life saver

ALIGARH:It may be a general opinion that few patients admitted in Intensive Care Unit make a return journey to life, but the state-of-the-art 12-bedded Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Department of Anaesthesiology, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University is set to change this common perception.
Recently, an accident occurred in a meat factory in Aligarh taking a toll of three people. The only survivor in that accident was admitted in J N Medical College ICU in an unconscious and dyspneic state. Later, he developed myocarditis and became hemodynamically unstable. He was diagnosed as a case of Carbon Monoxide poisoning.

The patient was very efficiently managed with ventilator and cardiac support. After 48 hours of ventilator support and vigilant hemodynamic monitoring, the patient was extubated on the 2nd day after he showed signs of consciousness, spontaneous breathing and hemodynamic stability. The patient was later shifted from the ICU to the medicine ward without any ailment.

Prof Tariq Mansoor, CMS & Principal, J N Medical College & Hospital, congratulated the doctors’ team comprising Prof S Moied Ahmed, Dr Rafi Anwar, Dr Obaid A Siddiqui, Dr Shahna Ali and the resident doctors of anaesthesiology and medicine for their achievement.

The ICU comprises 8 ventilated beds, 3 step down beds and 1 bed dedicated to hemodialysis.  This is one of the few ICUs in Uttar Pradesh which has all the modern amenities and a dedicated hemodialysis unit within the ICU. The ICU is also being supported by the department of Microbiology, Radiology, Pathology and Biochemistry for various investigations.

Over the past few years, the ICU has managed critically ill patients maintaining a good survival rate with 100% survival rate in patients with organophosphorus poisoning, snake bite and suicidal hanging.
