“With these elections, AMU students have proved that they are disciplined, peace-loving and this university is different from other institutions of higher learning,” said the Vice chancellor adding that he has fulfilled his promise to conduct the AMUSU elections. He said that democratic aspirations and values will continue to thrive in AMU with a strong AMUSU in place.
The Vice Chancellor said that with the elected AMUSU, it is hoped that this platform will be used in the interest of the university and students. “We have high hopes that the AMUSU will establish useful dialogues with the administration on issues concerning students,” said the Vice Chancellor.
He further assured to fulfill genuine demands of students including the accommodation problems along with other important issues. “Construction of new residential halls to accommodate 5000 boys and 2000 girls is underway and soon the accommodation problems will be taken care of,” he added.
The Vice Chancellor pointed out that with the financial assistance of alumni, construction of a new hall for the foreign students will start soon. He added that the day is not far, when AMU will attain the number one ranking among the Indian Universities. “We have a target to reach the number one spot in rankings before the 2017 Sir Syed’s bicentenary celebrations,” said Lt. Gen. Shah.
The Vice Chancellor urged the AMU Community to judge his four-and-a-half year old tenure by the development works carried out in the university.
Dr Mohsin Raza, former AMUSU President in 1966, who attended the ceremony as the Chief Guest, said that the objective of AMUSU’s establishment, was not only to bring about academic excellence in students, but also to raise their interests in literary and cultural activities.
He pointed out that AMUSU from its beginning helped creating leadership qualities, personality development, debating culture and scholarship among other traits in students.
“The AMUSU takes pride in the fact that the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi was its first life member and it produced more than 50 freedom fighters,” said Dr Raza.
Highlighting the active role of AMUSU in the ‘Minority Character’ restoration movement, Dr Raza said that AMUSU in itself is an institution, which should never be dormant. Dr Raza also urged the newly elected AMUSU office bearers to adopt a positive approach towards helping administration in university’s progress.
He called upon AMUSU to work for educational uplift of marginalized people living in university’s vicinity.
AMUSU President, Mr Faizul Hasan assured that he will make efforts to solve student’s problems and will maintain secular ethos of the University. He promised to work for the restoration of AMU’s ‘Minority Character’, better medical facilities for students, installation of modern apparatuses in the laboratories and introduction of new courses. He urged students to maintain University’s cultural ethos and traditions.
Newly elected Vice President, Mr Mohd Nadeem Ansari said that he will work for the betterment of the AMU student’s community in particular and the University in general. He also assured to work for all sections of students during his tenure. “We should be recognized only as Aligarians and by other identities,” he said.
Honorary Secretary, Mr Nabeel Usmani said that the newly elected Union will function in an effective and efficient manner. He stressed to make the University’s Training and Placement Office more effective and result oriented for the availability of better career opportunities for students.
Other AMUSU candidates including Mr Mohd Abul Farah (Shazli), Mr Mohd Rizwan, Mr Mohd Arafat Hasan Rizvi, Mr Janib Hasan, Mr Farhan Ali, Ms Kehkashan and Mr Mohd Emran Ghazi also delivered speeches during the ceremony.
Chief Election Officer, Professor Iqbal Parwez and Honorary Treasurer AMUSU, Prof Mohd Nafees Ahmad Ansari along with senior cabinet, Mr Naved Ahmad were present.
Cabinet members, Mr Amanullah, Mr Mohd Naved Siddiqui, Mr Atif Idrees, Mr Irfan Ali, Mr Abdul Wasey, Ms Ghazala Ahmad, Mr Waseel K, Ms Labiba Sherwani and Ms Sadaf Rasool were also present.Dr Shariq Aqueel conducted the programme.
