AMU celebrates Independence Day with enthusiasm

ALIGARH: “Had not there been the unfortunate incidents of violence on the University campus recently, the Aligarh Muslim University would have achieved number one position in the country”, said AMU Vice Chancellor, Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah, while addressing a gathering of teachers, students and other staff members after hoisting the national flag at Strachey Hall, marking the 70th Independence Day of India.
Lt. Gen. Shah said that he was fully committed to the development of the University and had initiated a number of projects including construction of new hostels, sports facilities and restoration of historical buildings. He said that the Moosa Dakri Museum had become a centre of attraction for all visitors.

The Vice Chancellor pointed out that with an unprecedented emphasis, more than twelve hundred University teachers, school teachers and non-teaching staff had been appointed on the recommendations of the General Selection Committees during the past four years, while efforts were on to fill up the remaining vacancies of support staff during the current year.

Lt. Gen. Shah assured the University community that no stone will be left unturned for the restoration of the minority status of the University. He said that all preparations were on to strongly plead the case in the Apex Court and he had full confidence in the judiciary that it would deliver justice in favour of the University.

The Vice Chancellor, along with the Pro-Vice Chancellor Brig. S. Ahmad Ali and other University officials distributed fruits to the ailing students in the University Health Service and planted saplings in the Health Service premises.

Later, the Vice Chancellor, along with Mrs. Sabiha Simi Shah, attended a programme at the Centre for Adult and Continuing Education. In his address, Lt. Gen. Shah stressed on the women empowerment through education and urged the stakeholders to pay their full attention to educating children.

Prof. N.A.K. Durrani, Dean, Faculty of Social Science said that women and children attending the programme mainly belonged to the villages adopted by the University for development.Prof. Pervez Ahmad, Director of the Centre welcomed the guests and Dr. Shamim Ahmad conducted the programme.

The Aligarh Muslim University also organized an All India Mushaira on the eve of the Independence Day, under the aegis of Urdu Academy, at Women’s College Auditorium. AMU Pro-Chancellor Nawab Ibne Saeed Khan of Chhatari inaugurated the Mushaira while the Vice Chancellor Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah presided over the Mushaira proceedings. Dr. Rahat Abrar, Director of the Academy, welcomed the guests while Dr. Shariq Aqeel conducted the Mushaira.
