AMU emerges winner in North Zone Inter University Cricket

Aligarh:Host Aligarh Muslim University continued its winning spree by capturing the title of the North Zone Inter University Cricket Tournament. In an enthralling competition, AMU beat University of Delhi by 77 runs in the final match.


The Score:

Aligarh Muslim University  scored 203 in 40 overs (Salman Ahmad 62, Saad Ghazanfar 40, Narendra Sharma three for 33) bt University of Delhi scored 126 in 20.5 overs (Rohan Rathi 40 and Yogesh Kumar 25, Gavendra  Goswami three for 15, Mirza Hashir Beg three for 20 and Sultan Ahmad three for 40).

Man of the Tournament award was given to Mohd Sultan for scoring 290 runs and bagging 18 wickets. Salim Ansari was declared as the Batsman of the tournament for scoring 304 runs while Best bowler of the tournament award was conferred on Mirza Hashir beg for getting 18 wickets in the tournament.

AMU Vice Chancellor Lt Gen Zameer Uddin Shah (Retd.) and Pro Vice Chancellor Brig S Ahmad Ali (Retd.) presented the trophies to winner and the runner up teams.

Lt Gen Shah said that although hockey is the national game of India but cricket resides in the hearts of Indians. He said that it is a matter of proud that after becoming winner of North Zone in tennis, the cricket team of AMU also captured the same title. Lt Gen Shah pointed out that AMU is shining, not only in academics but also in sports. He informed that the University administration is planning to prepare for international level sports grounds as the Association of Indian Universities or BCCI may soon organize any type of big matches here. AMU administration is ready to provide any possible support to the cause, he added. Lt Gen Shah also thanked Mr Bayer Mustafa Khan, former Ranji player and an alumnus of AMU for installing digital score board at the wellingdon cricket ground. He also declared a cash prize of Rs 15000 for the winner team of AMU.

Dr Gurdeep Singh, Joint Secretary, Association of Indian Universities, Mr Tahir Hasan, vice president, UP BCCI and Mr Yudhvir Singh, UP BCCI also addressed the function.

Professor M Shoaib Zaheer, Secretary, AMU Games Committee welcomed the guests while Dr Moinuddin, President, AMU Cricket Club and the organizing secretary of the tournament conducted the program and also presented the vote of thanks.

AMU Registrar Dr Asfar Ali Khan, DSW Prof Anis Ismail and former secretary of AMU Games Committee Professor Absar Mustafa Khan, along with students and teachers in large number, were present on the occasion. The souvenir of the tournament was also released during the program.
