World TB Day celebrations start at JN Medical College

Aligarh:As part of the week long celebrations of World TB Day, the Pulmonology and ID Clinic of the Department of Pediatrics, JN Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University today organized free check up camp for children. In the camp Professor Farzana K Baig, along with her team members, conducted free health checkups of children and also distributed free of cost drugs to them.


While addressing the children and their guardians, Professor Farzana K Baig said that if there is a regular occurrence of chest infection, severe cough, fever, night sweats, weakness, loss of appetite, etc. among children, then they should be investigated for Tuberculosis immediately. Referring to the children visiting the Pulmonology and ID Clinic for treatment of TB, she informed that as per a household survey conducted during May 2014 to August 2015, out of 80 children, 26 were found infected. Professor Baig said that in 2015, 191 out of 229 cases of tuberculosis in OPD were having pulmonary while 38 having extra pulmonary tuberculosis.

Professor Baig said that worldwide 9.6 million people are estimated to have fallen ill with TB in 2014, among which 5.4 million were men, 3.2 million women and 1 million children. She pointed out that India alone contribute to 23 percent of world’s new cases and 21 percent of world’s TB deaths. Professor Baig mentioned that drug therapy is the only effective measure for the treatment of active tuberculosis.

Professor Baig informed that a new vaccine against TB, developed by recombinant DNA technologies, is under process, which can further boost up the preventive strategies.

She said that in an effort to create awareness regarding TB, the Department of Pediatrics is running the Pulmonology and ID Clinic at Ward 17 on every Wednesday.

A poster and a quiz competition were also organized on the occasion. Sameena, Saif, Sangam and Sharia won first, whereas Hania Qamar, Hira Tabassum and Sania Zia got second prizes respectively in the Poster competition. The third prize was given to Anam Khan, Nida Khan, Iqra Mehek, Prathyakcha Rai and Hassan Shamsi. In the Quiz competition, the first, second and third prizes were given to Sushmita, Parisha Varshney and Navni Garg respectively.

Professor Jamal Ahmad, Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Professor Abrar Ahmed, Professor Zubair Ahmad and Professor S Manazir also visited the camp.
