Dr Aalam participates in ‘HYDRO 2015’ International Conference

Aligarh:Dr Javed Aalam, Associate Professor with the Department of Civil Engineering, Aligarh Muslim University recently participated in the ‘HYDRO 2015, 20th International Conference on Hydraulics, Water Resources and River Engineering’ held at Roorkee, where he presented a paper on ‘Regional flood frequency analysis for some Indian catchments.
’The conference was organized by the Department of Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee in association with The Society for Hydraulics.   Dr Aalam has elaborated on the issue of safety and economy of water resources depending on the correct prediction of future hydrologic events.
In the paper presentation, Dr Aalam stated that flood magnitudes and their frequencies are needed for successful operation and economical design of pivotal hydraulic structures such as dams, reservoirs and spillways, bridges and small culverts.
He further said that the flood frequency analysis is one of the commonly used methods of flood estimation, if sufficient flood data is available at the gauging site.“The flood frequency analysis is entirely based on the assumption that the floods are random and the floods in future are supposed to bear similar statistical properties that have occurred in the past,” said Dr Aalam adding that if the available data record is too short for At-site Flood Frequency Analysis, Regional Flood Frequency Analysis is preferred for flood estimation.
Using the Regional Flood Frequency Analysis for relatively large catchment area of Indian rivers, Dr Aalam has presented Annual peak flood data of some of the Indian river catchments obtained from various sources.His paper elaborates that the value of growth factors obtained by the conventional methods are higher than those of L-moment methods.
