MEDICS organize Health Camp

Aligarh:Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC) students run NGO, MEDICS recently organized a Health-Camp for Diabetes awareness and free consultations at the Turkman Gate area in Aligarh City. 


During the camp, at least 325 patients were given free consultation and 97 patients were screened for Diabetes, in which 23 patients were found with random blood sugar in Diabetic range, while four patients with above 400 blood sugar were referred to JNMC.

Prof Athar Ansari, Department of Community Medicine, JNMC and Founder Advisory member of MEDICS, who answered queries of patients during the camp said that despite prevalence and prevention, there are 40 million people with diabetes in India and the numbers are likely to rise upto 70 million in 2025.

He also discussed normal risk factors and role of diet and exercise in prevention of Diabetes.

He informed that with an increase rate of 123 percent in the recent years, India is becoming Diabetes capital of the world. He warned that Diabetes is now becoming common in all age groups and geographies.   

Prof M Mobarak Hussain, Department of Physiology, AMU said that with unhealthy life styles, both urban and rural people are becoming prone to Diabetes all over the world however, Indians are at risk of Diabetes more because of more fat content in comparison to muscle content in their bodies.  

He added that obesity is known risk factor and children of diabetic people are at risk.

Prof Hussain mentioned that Diabetes is a silent killer as the disease effects affects heart, kidneys and eye-sight. He pointed out that heart attacks in Diabetic patients are painless due to nerve injuries.

Prof Hussain also said that all the risk factors related to Diabetes should be screened routinely as multiple organ damages in advance stage are irreversible.

Meanwhile, Dr Ashish Yadav, Dr Anwar, Dr Waseem also gave consultations during the camp.

Chakit Satya, Minhaz, Talha, Atif, Dr Abhishek Yadav, Sameer, Zeeshan, Sunit and Gajendra volunteered to make the camp a success.
