The Department of Community Medicine celebrates the World Health Day

Aligarh:World Health Day 2016 on the theme ‘Beat Diabetes’ was celebrated by the Department of Community Medicine. Prof. Najam Khalique, Chairman of the Department of Community Medicine cautioned the community about the menace and the rapid rise of diabetes in recent years. The diabetes epidemic is rapidly increasing across the world, with the most dramatic increase in low and middle income countries like India.
About half of the cases of diabetes in the community remain hidden or undiagnosed. Globally, About 4.9 million deaths occur due to Diabetes, implying-one death every 7th second! In India, during 1971-2000 about ten-fold increase has been noted, and we have already reached the numbers projected for 2020! Diabetes can be controlled by simple life style measures such as maintaining ideal body weight, being physically active for at least 30 minutes for at least 5 days/week, reducing saturated fats and to avoid tobacco use. The Indian Association of Preventive & Social Medicine (IAPSM) headquartered in Gujarat organized a nationwide World Health Day Quiz on the occasion with the help of the Department of Community Medicine, JN Medical College Aligarh. The preliminary round for the quiz took place on 5th April, 2016 in which a record number of 53 teams with 156 students participated. JN Medical College, AMU, Aligarh recorded the highest number of participants among all the participating medical colleges in India. The finals of the quiz were conducted by the Department of Community Medicine on the World Health Day, 7th of April, 2016. Dr. M. Salman Shah & Dr. Nafis Faizi were the coordinators and quizmasters for the IAPSM-WHD quiz, with notable contributions from Dr. Maroof and Dr. Shibly Khan. The team of Mr. Kunal Singh, Mr. Ankit Kataria & Mr. Mayank Srivastav were declared the winners for the IAPSM-WHD quiz. Prof. Najam Khalique, congratulated the winners and wished them best of luck for the future rounds. Prof. M. Athar Ansari, Prof. Ali Amir, Dr. Anees Ahmad, Dr. Uzma Eram, Dr. Saira Mehnaz, Dr. Suboohi Afzal, Mr. Salman Khalil, Dr. Ali Jafar Abedi, Dr. Tabassum Nawab, Dr. Urfi and the residents of the department were also present during the occasion.
