Aligarh:Dr Mohd Rihan, Member-In-Charge, Electricity, Aligarh Muslim University recently participated in the public hearing of UP Electricity Regulatory Commission and raised the issue of the high tariff of electricity being paid by AMU. He also submitted a representation for the same.
In his representation, Dr Rihan brought the attention of the commission to the fact that the present tariff results in grouping of public institutions like the Aligarh Muslim University and other government run educational institutions with commercial installations. However, unlike commercial installations the government educational institutions do not operate to serve any commercial benefit, he said. Dr Rihan also mentioned that the grouping of public educational institutions with the private ones is also not convincing as the private institutions charge comparatively higher fee from students and hence can afford the higher tariff.
Dr Rihan also emphasized that the Aligarh Muslim University, an institution of national importance established by act of parliament, has been playing a pivotal role especially in the development of socially backward and disadvantaged sections in the country.
He finally called for the grouping of the public institutions, like the AMU, getting supply at single point, in a different category and the provision of significant relief in tariff for the same.
Dr Rihan told that the present annual electricity consumption of the university results into an annual payment of about Rs 25 Crore as electricity charges which consumes a major part of the non-plan grant and leaves a very little margin for academic development works.
He informed that the high tariff is due to the fact that the public institutions, getting supply at single point, have been grouped in the HV-1 category of rate schedule applicable to non industrial bulk loads. The Vice Chancellor Lt Gen Zameer Uddin Shah (Retd) has been trying very hard at different levels to get the tariff reduced, Dr Rihan added.
