Prof Anees carries out successful Whipple’s Procedure on four patients

Aligarh:The Department of Surgery, J N Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University reached another milestone after four patients were treated with a successful Whipple’s Procedure done by Professor Afzal Anees and his team.
The patients, who have recovered will soon be discharged.  After the successful surgeries, Prof Anees showed his gratitude by thanking the proctorship of Dr Ajay Sharma, head of G I Unit at SMS College and hospital, Jaipur and Prof Ashok Gupta of SGPGIMS, Lucknow for his continuous and necessary guidance.He added that these complex and major surgeries have been possible because of better facilities of Anaesthesia, ICU and HDU care, developed in the hospital under leadership of Prof Tariq Mansoor, Principal and CMS.Prof Anees has also attributed his success to his teacher and mentor, late Prof S M Ashraf; Unit Incharge, Prof M A Khan and dedicated team of surgeons and anaesthetists including Dr Shehtaj Khan, Dr Shehna Ali (Anaesthetist), Resident doctors and the rest of the staff.He added that these successful surgeries will bring ‘rays of hope’ for the down trodden and economically weaker sections, who have difficulties in affording private hospitals and long waiting time of other government hospitals.  
Whipple’s procedure is a major surgery done for cancer around and in the head of pancreas, a gland responsible for digestion and metabolism. In this surgery, distal end of stomach, whole of duodenum, lower end of common bile duct and head of pancreas are removed, and reconstruction is done with the small intestine. The surgery is technically challenging and takes about 5-6hours or even more at times.
