JNMC observes World Asthma Day

Aligarh: The Pulmonology and ID Clinic of the Department of Pediatrics, JN Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University today organized a free health check up camp for children to observe the World Asthma Day-2016. Professor Farzana K Beig with her team, conducted free health checkups of children and also distributed free of cost drugs to them during the camp.

While addressing the children and their guardians, Prof Beig said children may have asthma if they are suffering with a recurrent occurrence of cough and breathlessness and wheeze with diurnal and seasonal variation.
She added that in infants, recurrent wheezing is the most common presentation of asthma early diagnosis and effective management of troublesome recurrent wheezing may decrease the high proportion of infants with recurrent wheezing.
She informed that an estimated 300 million individuals are affected with asthma worldwide.“It is a cause of substantial burden to people, often causing a reduced quality of life, not only due to its physical effects, but also its psychological and social effects,” said Prof Beig adding that in India approximately 5-10 percent of children have asthma symptoms and among them 2.5 to 5 percent children has severe asthma.
Prof Beig confirmed that in an effort to create awareness regarding asthma in children, the Department of Pediatrics is running the Pulmonology and ID Clinic at Ward 17 on every Wednesday in which at least 700 asthma patients are undergoing treatment. 
Around 100 students participated in the competitions, in which Sania Zia, Syed Ali Hadi Rizvi, Jubair Shamsi got first, second and third prizes in the quiz competition while Team C of Hassan, Sadique, Adnan, Iqra, Nida and Ambika; Team D of Shruti Shandilya, Shruti Bansal and Danish Kamal and Team G of Malik Huzaif Shabeer, Urooj Najmi and Ovais Mehboob received first, second and third prizes in poster competition.

On the occasion Prof. Jamal Ahmad, Dean Faculty of Medicine, Prof. S Manazir Ali, Chairman Department of Pediatrics, Prof. S. Abrar Hasan, Prof. S.C. Sharma, Department of ENT, Prof. Asif Hasan, Dr. Zeeba Zaka-ur-Rab, Dr. Uzma Firdaus, Dr. Mohd. Kashif Ali and Dr. Shad Abqari were also present.
