Short term course inaugurated at AMU Kishanganj Centre

ALIGARH:The Centre for Academic Leadership and Educational Management (CALEM), UGC-Human Resource development Centre, Aligarh Muslim University organized a six-day short term course on “How to teach effectively” at the AMU Centre in Kishanganj, Bihar.


Addressing the inaugural session, Chief Guest Mr. Pankaj Dixit, IAS, District Magistrate, Kishanganj said that there was a need for devising teaching methods keeping in mind the local needs and using minimum resources. He stressed that the educational outcome of students of this region demonstrates a very poor and alarming trend and there is a lot to do to improve the situation in this field. He said that construction of teaching aids did not require much money, rather a creative outlook on the part of the teachers. Highlighting the nobility of teaching profession he pointed out that quality teaching reflected in the behaviour of the individual. He said that efforts should be made to enable teachers use their inner potential and regenerate them in their students.

Prof. Shahid Farooq, Department of Geology, AMU emphasized the need to use latest technology in teaching learning process. He urged the young teachers not to get stuck with the traditional way of teaching, rather bring a variety in teaching style by making use of latest technology. He reiterated that teachers need to understand the significance of technology blended teaching learning and become self-motivated to adopt technological advancement in the field of teaching and learning. He further clarified that the only mantra to become an effective teacher is to realize that there is still much left to learn.

Earlier, welcoming the guests and highlighting the aims and objectives of the short term course, Dr. Raashid Nehal, Director, AMU Kishangan Centre said that the course was aimed at motivating the teachers of Muslim Managed Degree Colleges to improve their teaching and discharge a meaningful role in society. Quoting from Mr. Hamid Ansari, Vice President’s remarks at the National Stocktaking Convention on Right to Education, he said that despite the increased enrolment in elementary education the educational outcome has declined. He said that about half of class V children in rural India are unable to read a single paragraph or do basic math.

The six-day course consists of 16 training sessions including 5 sessions conducted by Prof. Shahid Farooq, 6 sessions by Prof. Sajid Jamad, 3 by Prof. D.N. Sansanwal, 2 by Dr. Raashid Nehal and 1 by Dr. Faiza Abbasi. A total number of 44 participants have registered for this event including teachers from Insan Degree College, Kishanganj College of Engineering and Technology, Azmet Institute of Technology, Tauheed Education Trust and teachers from AMU Kishanganj and Murshidabad Centre.

A book titled “Critical Pedagogy” by Dr. Raashid Nehal was also released on this occasion. Dr. Raashid Nehal proposed a vote of thanks.
