Prof Rais authors book on Climate Change and Human Health Scenario

Aligarh:Professor Rais Akhtar, an alumnus and former Visiting Professor of Aligarh Muslim University and IPCC Lead Author, has authored a book entitled ‘Climate Change and Human Health Scenario in South and South East Asia’, which has been published by Springer.
The book explores the first study focusing on climate change and health impacts in South and Southeast Asia from the regional perspective and is the first to present a regional analysis of climate change and human health, focusing on geographically and socio-economically distinct countries of South and Southeast Asia. It includes case studies from India, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Thailand, Nepal and Taiwan. The book deals with natural disasters including flood, droughts, heat waves and outbreaks of vector-borne diseases in the region.

Prof Akhtar said that Climate change is a significant and emerging threat to human health which represents a range of environmental hazards and is likely to affect people in both the developed and developing countries.  He said that in particular, it affects the regions, like South and Southeast Asian Countries, where the current burden of climate-sensitive diseases is high.

Having attended WHO’s First International Conference on Health and Climate as a WHO sponsored scientist, Professor Akhtar has also been invited to attend Second International Conference to be held in Paris in the month of July.The book acquires significance in the light of World Health Organization's First International Conference as well as the Paris Climate Agreement signed in December, 2015.
